Camino Stage 4: Day 1 – London to Sainte-Foy-la-Grande

La Gare du Nord, Paris.

Laurence and I were in London yesterday for his daughter’s wedding (a touching civil ceremony followed a marvellous blended Anglo-Lebanese feast and dancing – thank you Annabel and Nabil) and stayed over with family in very chic Hackney.

We were up silly early, and Laurence kindly dropped me at St Pancras for the 8am Eurostar to Paris, before heading to lovely Southwell. We said our fond farewells: we don’t really like being apart, but the urge towards pilgrimage is very powerful, and I am so blessed to have so understanding and supportive a husband.

It was crowded but straightforward. The fun started on the next leg from Paris Montparnasse to Bordeaux. We lost an hour to police coming to examine an abandoned bag in Tours, and then torrential rain brought the train to quite a sudden halt. We sat there for a while and eventually arrived in Bordeaux nearly an hour late. I just made my connection and am settled in beautiful Sainte Foy for the night.

Outside the Mairie

Evenings, when you are on pilgrimage, are spent writing, planning, and revisiting the way one breaks up the huge distances into not only manageable chunks, but also manageable so that you can repeat them day after day. This stage has one very big day in it that I was rather dreading. Tonight’s planning has revealed a better solution. That solves one little anxiety.

Early bed as we only had four hours sleep last night!

I’ve spent some considerable time staying near Sainte Foy – great market on Sats – full of Brits! Or used to be perhaps not now post Br—-t!
