Begin Here – and Welcome!

Thank you for opening my website. I use this site almost entirely for blogging in four principal directions: first, as a long-standing but somewhat unusual priest in the Church of England I comment here on the state of the church, and the things that concern me. I am currently researching its decline from 1960-2020 and the ecclesiological responses to that long slow event. Comments about that will appear from time to time.

I am also involved with the tortuous problems that the Church of England has over sexuality and relationships. Married to my husband, I am barred from functioning as a priest by virtue of that choice. There is more information on the Who I am page and in this Wikipedia article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Pemberton_(priest). You will find comment about this as events unfold

Thirdly, I have begun a pilgrimage from Vézelay in Burgundy to Compostela in Galicia, following the old pilgrimage route of St James. I am doing it in bursts (or plods, to be more accurate) and from time to time there will be a sudden rush of postings because I have gone off to do some of that. This is a long held ambition, and I am taking each pilgrimage stage as an opportunity for extended reflection and prayer.

Finally, I will post about Southwell and about the Minster. I have lived here longer than anywhere in my life, and I love it. I worked for fifteen years as a lay clerk in the choir, and I am still very involved in the life of the church: I serve, I sing as a deputy lay clerk, I am a member of the Needlework Guild, and I act as an honorary chaplain.
